There are many museums in Stuttgart - but none is as curious, charming and unique as the Pig Museum. The largest pig collection in the world awaits visitors within the historic walls of the old abattoir: over 50,000 exhibits tell the story of the pig in 27 themed rooms.

Pigs in all their facets

The Pig Museum in Stuttgart impresses with an extraordinary variety of exhibits, themes and creative presentations. On two floors and around 800 square meters, 27 individually designed themed rooms guide visitors through all facets of the pig - from zoology, art and culture to mythology and symbolism. Visitors can learn exciting facts about the development of pig breeds, historical wild boar hunting, the pig as a symbol of luck and its depiction in advertising and everyday culture. The more than 50,000 exhibits range from nostalgic piggy banks and cuddly toys to curious works of art, everyday objects and unique pieces from all over the world.

A particular highlight are the changing special exhibitions, which regularly open up new perspectives - including the popular show on the Chinese Year of the Pig, which has now become part of the permanent exhibition. For these temporary exhibitions, the museum regularly attracts renowned artists such as Horst Eckert, alias Janosch.

Restaurant & beer garden in the pig museum

The special atmosphere of the pig museum also includes its in-house gastronomy. In the "Schlachthof" café and restaurant, the team serves Swabian classics and homemade cakes. The dining rooms are also decorated with selected exhibits and offer space for up to 200 guests. In summer, the large beer garden with around 600 seats invites you to linger.

Historical Information

The Stuttgart Pig Museum has its roots in a passion for collecting: Erika Wilhelmer, a trained innkeeper and enthusiastic pig lover, founded the first lucky pig museum in Bad Wimpfen at the end of the 1980s. Her collection of over 25,000 exhibits was entered into the Guinness Book of Records in 1992.

After several stops, the museum finally found its current home in 2010 in the listed administrative building of the former Stuttgart abattoir. The approximately 100-year-old Art Nouveau ensemble was extensively renovated and has since provided a home for over 50,000 exhibits - as well as an atmospheric setting for gastronomy, culture and encounters.

How to get there

The Pig Museum is located in the east of Stuttgart on the historic site of the old slaughterhouse. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Cannstatter Wasen - two well-known excursion destinations in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg. Thanks to its central location, the museum is easy to reach both by car and by public transport.

Those arriving by car can reach the museum quickly via the B10 and B14 highways. Free parking is available on the grounds. The Schweinemuseum is also easily accessible by bus and streetcar: The nearest stops are only a few minutes' walk away and are regularly served by Stuttgart's local public transport system.
