Hiking in Italy's Alpine regions

For those who love to hike, the north of Italy is especially attractive. This is where the southern Alps rise up over the scenery, creating idyllic valleys and high peaks. The Aosta valley, the smallest region of Italy, is characterized by the highest alpine mountains: The view glides over the Matterhorn, Monte Rose as well as the Gran Paradiso and last but not least the imposing Mont Blanc. The Mont Blanc, with a height of 4.810 meters, is the tallest mountain in Europe.

In the Piedmont region, the summits of the Monviso mountain and all the other peaks create a uniquely beautiful backdrop. In Liguria, high mountains transform into gentle hills – and lush green meadows open up the view over the Ligurian Sea. In Lombardy, the mountain range of the Alps reaches from Valchiavenna over Veltlin to the Valcamonica Valley.

Veneto, Trentino and South Tyrol are branded by the Dolomites. It is not surprising that the characteristic mountain massifs, as for instance the Rose Garden near Bolzano, have been declared a UNESCO world heritage. The three big valleys of South Thyrol, the Etsch valley, the Eisack valley and the Puster valley, offer a net of well-established hiking routes for various different levels.
