Route description
The hike starts at Waldfreibad in Weiskirchen, where you walk towards the natural reserve Holzbachtal. The beautiful trail leads you to Hohen Felsen, where the path gets steeper and steeper. You overcome a few steep ascents to get to Schimmelkopf. Along Wahnbach river, you eventually reach an asphalted road, which gets you back into the forest. Past a viewing point, you get back to where you started.
Interesting facts
- You're traveling a distance of 18 km on this strenuous trail. The average length of all hikes in the Saarland is 43 km.
- You shouldn’t forget to bring your hiking boots. There are some sections on the trail where sturdy footwear is required. There are places to buy beverages and food along the track. However it’s always recommended to bring enough water and food along with you.

By car
Follow motorway A8 via Merzig and Losheim to Weiskirchen. If you drive on A1, take exit Primstal and continue towards Wadern to get to Weiskirchen. From the village centre, follow the signs to the Kurzentrum, where you will come across the Waldfreibad. Plenty of parking space available.
By bus and train
Take a train to Merzig railway station. From there, take bus R1. Alternatively, 3-Seen-Bus (R230) takes you from Mettlach train station to the starting point of the hike. The bus stop is a 10 minutes' walk from where the hike begins.
