Description
The Landmark of the Wine Region
Visible from afar, the landmark of the wine region, YBurg Castle, sits atop the 514-meter-high YBerg. The ruins, featuring a tower over 20 meters tall, have been a popular destination since 1892, when a forest lodge-style restaurant began serving food and drink to visitors.
Culinary Specialties
Today, the western keep can be climbed as a lookout tower. The restaurant, with its large outdoor terrace, offers a sweeping view all the way to the Vogtland region. The castle atmosphere also reigns in the restaurant, which is designed with an eye for detail and offers specialties such as “flambéed Rittergalgen.”
Historical Information
YBurg Castle, which was located within the Eberstein domain, has a turbulent history. The keep on the western side of the castle complex was likely built as early as 1200. The eastern section and the three-story residential building were constructed in the 13th or 14th century. It gained fame through Margrave Edward Vortunat, who set up an alchemist’s laboratory in the castle’s cellar to produce gold. Over the centuries, the castle had to withstand several wars and acts of destruction, such as the Peasants’ War of 1525 and the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689. Lightning strikes also left their mark on the castle on several occasions.
How to get there
The YBurg ruins are situated in Baden-Baden-Neuweiler. Take motorway A5 until the exit Bühl or Baden-Baden, then the B3 in the direction of Steinbach and later Neuweiler. There is a church square at the St.Michaels-Church, follow the St.-Michaels-Street and turn right into the Bocksbeutelstraße after 100 m. From the church square onwards you'll find signs leading you to the YBurg.
