Winter Atmosphere on the Market Square
The Winterberger Winterdorf serves as the seasonal focal point of Winterberg from the mid of December to the start of january. During this period, a compact arrangement of wooden stalls, food vendors, and a musical programme is set up on the centrally located market square, attracting both locals and visitors to the Sauerland region. The design follows a deliberately traditional approach, creating a calm and orderly atmosphere that sets it apart from larger event markets.
Distinctive Features of the Winterdorf
One of the Winterdorf’s key features is the ice rink located directly within the market area, encouraging visitors of all ages to put on their skates. The diverse music programme is another established element of the event. Regional musicians and ensembles perform regularly throughout the day and evening. A structured programme schedule helps visitors orient themselves and choose either quieter or more active sections of the market according to their preferences.
A Varied Programme of Music, Family Activities and New Year’s Events
The event programme combines musical performances, smaller DJ evenings and family-friendly activities. It includes appearances by regional groups, programmes for children and evening events hosted by DJs.
The New Year’s Eve programme represents the seasonal highlight and attracts a high number of visitors each year. Of particular note is the continued involvement of regional artists, which gives the Winterdorf a strong local connection and contributes to the cultural identity of the event. On New Year’s Eve, the market remains open until 1:00 a.m.
Insider Tip: Many visitors combine their stay in Winterberg with a day on the ski slopes. This is especially convenient in the late afternoon, when the lifts close and the market is already open. It allows for a seamless transition from winter sports to a relaxed visit to the Winter Village.
Historical Information
The Winterberger Winter Village originally developed from a small seasonal market that was primarily shaped by local exhibitors. Over the years, the concept was expanded and given a more structured framework, resulting in a well-established winter event that consistently takes place between Advent and the beginning of the new year. The addition of musical performances and an ice rink was gradually introduced, transforming the Winter Village into a recurring component of Winterberg’s seasonal event calendar.
