Description
Founded in 1911, zoo Hellabrunn is one of the most visited zoos in germany. The park is located right within the nature preserve of the eastern Isar-Auen in Munich. It is 40 ha large and hosts over 19,000 animals of 750 species. The zoo is devided into geographical areas. Hellabrunn was indeed the first zoo to implement this geographical devision that is nowadays adopted in zoos all around the world.
While you tour through the park you also tour through Europe, America, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Artic, being presented the region's typical animals. One of the biggest compounds in Hellabrunn houses all kinds of birds. Spot storks, herons and many other birds. Watch their courtship display and their technique to build nests.
Besides the creatively designed outdoor areas, the zoo holds more than ten animal houses. One of the most popular ones is the elephant house, which currently houses five Asian elephants. But not only the elephants are worth a visit. All animal houses provide insight into the earth's amazing diversity of species. Thus, you will be able to watch chimpanzees and gorillas at the jungle house as well as spot up to 50 different species of corals along with tropical fish.
A highlight for children is the special children's zoo with a spacious lawn, where the youngsters can interact with the animals and pet them.
