Description

Tucked away in the dense forests of the Fichtel Mountains and far from the well-trodden peaks, the "Prinzenfelsen" are a real hidden gem for nature lovers and adventurers. These striking granite towers are not only an impressive natural monument, but also offer one of the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in the region – with sweeping vistas across forests, valleys, and even into the Czech Republic.

Rising from the heart of the Fichtelgebirge, the "Prinzenfelsen" stand out as one of the most distinctive rock formations in the area. A fixed metal ladder leads safely up to the viewing platform at 751 meters above sea level – from here, you'll enjoy a breathtaking view of the forested low mountain range landscape, stretching all the way to the Czech border.

Getting to the Prinzenfelsen

The hike to the" Prinzenfelsen" begins at the parking area near the Silberhaus inn. From there, a wide and level forest trail leads gently into the woods – perfect for a relaxed stroll without any major elevation gain.

After just a few minutes, a narrow marked path branches off to the right. Between the trees, the first granite towers slowly come into view, rising impressively from the forest floor. After about 15 to 20 minutes, you’ll reach the highest rock formation. A sturdy staircase leads up to the secured viewing platform – from here, a breathtaking panoramic view opens up over the Fichtelgebirge.

If you have a bit more time, the hike can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby Fichtelsee – perfect for swimming, walking, or simply unwinding in nature.

Historical Information

As early as the 15th century, the rock formations were mentioned in historical border records under the name "Scheferstein." Later, the name "Girglstein" became common – named after the nearby Girgl Cave. In 1911, the two most prominent granite towers received their present names: Prinz-Ludwig-Felsen and Prinz-Leopold-Felsen. The occasion was a visit by the Wittelsbach princes Ludwig and Leopold to the region. Since then, the Prinzenfelsen have been designated a protected natural monument and recognized as a significant geotope.

How to get there

The Prinzenfelsen are located in the Fichtelgebirge in northeastern Bavaria, nestled between the Silberhaus rest stop on the B303 in the municipality of Tröstau and the Hohe Matze mountain. The cliffs can be reached by car as well as by public transport.

By car

The easiest way to reach the Prinzenfelsen by car is via the B303 federal highway. The hiking car park at Gasthof Silberhaus is located directly along the road between Tröstau and Bischofsgrün. You can park there for free—this is also where the well-marked hiking trail to the Prinzenfelsen begins.

By public transport

Public transport is also an option: buses run from Wunsiedel or Fichtelberg toward Silberhaus. The nearest stop is just a short walk from the guesthouse, making it easy to reach the trailhead on foot. Since bus connections in the region can be limited, it's advisable to check the current schedule in advance.
