Route description
This hike might not be very long, at 6.5km/4mi only, but you will still need around 3 hours in order to take in all the highlights on the way. You start at Weltenburg Abbey, which is a sight in itself. Next you ascend Frauenberg mountain to visit the historic chapel. Following the trail, you enjoy beautiful views over Danube river and Weltenburg. Walking parallel to a bike trail, you finally keep left to ascend to Wiesenkreuz. Stop and enjoy the view over Danube valley. Descend towards Kelheim, where you can see the Danube Gorge as well as the Hall of Liberation. Downhill, you will get to Kelheim's forest cemetery. Walk to Kelheim, and to the pier there. From there, follow Altmühltal-Panoramaweg trail to get back to where you started.
Interesting facts
- You're traveling a distance of 11 km on this easy trail. The average length of all hikes in Bavaria is 43 km.
- Make sure to bring sturdy footwear on this track. Hiking boots are highly recommended. There are places to buy beverages and food along the track. However it’s always recommended to bring enough water and food along with you.
Getting here
By car
Coming from Munich or Weiden, take motorway A93 and exit at Abensberg. From Nünberg, choose motorway A9 and exit at Denkendorf or Ingolstadt to get to the abbey. If you start in Passau, follow motorway A3, then change onto A93. Exit in Abensberg or Pentling, from where B16 takes you to Weltenburg.
Public transportation
Coming from Ingolstadt, you can take a train to Abensberg. From there, you should best get a taxi to the abbey. If you are coming from Regensburg, you can get a train to Saal an der Dona. A bus goes to Kelheim from here, where change onto the bus to Weltenburg.
By boat
Depending on where you set off, you can also go to Weltenburg by boat. From Kelheim, there are regular connections during the season from March to October.
