Route description
The starting point of the hike can be found on the southern entry to Riva del Garda directly by the hydroelectric station of Enel. Follow the road down south until you reach a tunnel. You will now approach the Old Ponale Road on your right and follow it for the rest of the tour. The path for hikers and bikers leads its way alongside the water with a magnificent view of the Lake Garda and the nature it is surrounded by.
After a short while you will get to a bridge across the Ponale Valley. Follow the path to the left and downhill towards Pregasina. Now you only need to hike down to the valley to reach the town. It is easiest to take a bus back to the starting point of the hike from here.

There are numerous places to eat to be found in Pregasina as well as in Riva del Garda.
Interesting facts
- You're traveling a distance of 10 km on this moderate trail. Average length of all hikes in Trentino is 12 km.
- You shouldn’t forget to bring your hiking boots. There are some sections on the trail where sturdy footwear is required. If you get hungry along the way, there are places to rest and get food. Nevertheless it’s recommended to also have enough water and food in your backpack when hiking or biking.
Highlights of the tour
The Old Ponale Road was constructed in the 19th century and would become to be one of the most important arterial roads for a long time- The road was locked since 1990 to make room for restoration works in the closer area. It is only since 2004 that the road can be used again for bikers and pedestrians. Because of its long history, the road flourishes with a historic charm that one can feel from the first step.
Variations
While on the bridge through the Ponale Valley you can orientate yourself uphill towards the right to the Ledro Lake. That will stretch your trip for about 6 kilometers, but will also add a magnificent view to your experience.
Getting here
By car
To get to Riva del Garda by car take the SS240 or the SS421. Once in Riva, exit the highway and search for a parking space close to the southern entry of the city.
With public transportation
It is also possible to park somewhere near a bus station and take public transportation to the the "Riva Centrale Enel" stop. That will also mark the starting point of this tour.
