Hamburg's historic Christmas market right in front of the city hall attracts almost three million visitors every year. Instead of commercial Christmas kitsch, the focus lies on traditional handicrafts.
The booths are arranged into a Christmas town that's truly one of a kind. Against the historical backdrop, visitors find a selection of crafts and Christmas treats. Approximately one hundred merchants offer wood carvings from Tyrol, ceramics from Lusatia, and more. Silversmiths showcase their craft, and even invite you to take part.
Afterwards, try gingerbread from Aachen or Nürnberg, and warm up with a mug of mulled wine. As a special highlight for the little ones, fairytale boats enchant your visit to the market. Spielzeuggasse (toy lane) is very popular as well. Merchants from all over the world offer a variety of toys here. An amazing sight for children and children at heart.
Flying Father Christmas and a Christmas Parade
Three times a day, you can watch visitors turn their gaze upwards, for another highlight. At 4, 6 and 8 pm, Father Christmas himself rides his sleigh above the historic Christmas market. A festive parade takes place every Sunday. A gleeful procession of elves, Santas, angels, and reindeer makes its way through Hamburg's city centre, spreading Christmas joy.

How to get there
Right in front of the city hall, the historic Christmas market is located amidst the city centre.
On public transport
Hamburg central train station is located near the Christmas market. Hence, if you're arriving by train, it will be easy for you to walk to the market. There are also numerous subway stations near, such as Rödingsmarkt, Meßberg, Mönckebergstraße, and Jungfernstieg. The latter is also a tram stop.
By car
If you want to go by car, take road B4 straight into the centre, and follow the signs guiding you to a car park. Another good option could be to use one of the various P&R facilities outside the city.
