Description
Römerberg is a historic square in Frankfurt am Main. As the heart of Frankfurt's old town, it impresses not only architecturally with its buildings but also with a long history that spans several centuries. Every year, the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market is also held here.
Name and Location
Römerberg is located in the heart of Frankfurt's old town, stretching between the Dominsel (Cathedral Island) to the east and the Karmeliterhügel (Carmelite Hill) to the west. Its central location makes it particularly easy to reach. Additionally, its name, which comes from the "Römer" – the medieval town hall – already hints at its historical significance.
Buildings and Monuments
Römerberg is surrounded by many historic buildings and significant monuments. The most striking is the Römer, Frankfurt's town hall. This landmark has been located at this historic site since the 15th century. The Old Nikolaikirche, an early Gothic church, stands on the south side of the square and adds to the impressive backdrop. In the center of the Römerberg is the Justice Fountain, which played an important role during imperial coronations.
Samstagsberg
The Samstagsberg, the eastern part of the Römerberg, also has an interesting history. It was originally named so because in the 9th century it was used for markets, fairs, tournaments, and celebrations on Saturdays. Over time, Samstagsberg was integrated into Römerberg but preserved its historical significance as a place of diversity and events. Today, it contributes to the preserved atmosphere and history of the Römerberg and remains an important part of this unique historical location in Frankfurt.
