Description
You have a fantastic view over Lake Cospuden from the observation tower on Bistumshöhe. The impressive wooden structure, reminiscent of a chimney, is 35 metres high. Industrial chimneys characterised the landscape here in the south of Leipzig for decades.
The tower was built in 2000 from Siberian larch wood and is open on all sides. A spiral staircase with 180 steps leads up to the uppermost viewing platform. From there, you not only have a great panoramic view of the lake, but also of the former Elster reservoir and the nearby Belantis amusement park. In good weather, you can also see the city skyline of Leipzig. If you're a little afraid of heights, just walk up to the first platform at a height of 12 metres.
Access to the tower on the south-western shore of the lake is possible all year round and is free of charge.
How to get there
The observation tower is located directly on the Cospuden lakeside circular path. To get there, however, you first have to conquer the Bistumshöhe before you can climb the 180 steps to the top viewing platform. There is a car park on the circular path around Lake Cospuden. The turn-off is signposted from Markkleeberg and from the direction of the leisure park.
