Description
One of the most important historical personalities for the city of Magdeburg and Saxony-Anhalt has been Emperor Otto the Great because he founded the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. That´s why the museum is called "Ottonianum" which means something like "ottonian". Because of that the Ottonianum dedicates since the grand opening in November 2018 the main topic of the museum to the emperor and his influence on the german and european history.
Experience the history of Magdeburg
All in all includes the museum three main topics which are all from the european middle age. Next to emperor Otto the Great and Queen Editha orignal exhibition pieces of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg and the archeological findings around the cathedral can be found. You have the opportunity to see the Lead coffin of Editha, antique components of the cathedral square buildings or the grave goods of Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg or Otto von Hessen.
Staying options in the Ottonianum
Sitting next to the cathedral of Magdeburg the Café Editha invites you to stay with a view onto the cathedral square and the facade of the cathedral. Also the D.O.M-Laden is worth a visit. There you can find exclusive products for Otto the Great and his Queen Editha but also professional literature, artificial postcards and some other treasures of the cathedral of Magdeburg.
Guided tours around the cathedral district
On request it is feasible to let yourself get guided through the history of the Ottonians and the history of the cathedral by a specialist. Beside the visit it is possible to take part in an one-hour city walk of the Ottonianum, every day at 2pm between may and october.
How to get there
With the car
Diagonally across, at the Cathedral Square, are a few parking spots which are chargeable. Excpet that you have the possibility to park at the parking lot "Am Dom" which is also chargeable. It´s only 200m away from the museum and barrier-free.
With public transport
On the backside of the museum building is a station of the Magdeburger city railway, which is accessible with the lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10 and N2.
