Description
Hallwyl Castle was founded in the late 12th century. It owes its name to the noble Aargau family of Hallwyl who lived in the castle for 800 years. Hallwyll's 500 family members have distinguished themselves over the course of their history in several fields: on federal battlefields, European courts, but also in science, politics and the financial world.
Exhibition
The exhibition in the historical rooms tells about these stories and some representatives. On the tour through the castle, visitors learn interesting facts about the medieval and modern world with the help of the audio guide.
In the attic there is an exhibition dedicated to the former owner of the castle, Franziska Romana. She lived in turbulent times (1758-1836) and underwent two important changes in the history of the region: from Ancien Régime to Helvetics and from Helvetics to Canton Aargau. The change in politics and culture is also evident in fashion. Here you can see Rococo, Empire and Biedermeier costumes. Franziska Romana (called the rebel) also had a large social network. Letters she wrote with contemporaries are also exhibited.
Events
Today, the idyllic castle is also a venue for selected cultural events such as open-air operas and cinema. In addition, the museum programme is framed by public guided tours, workshops and nature expeditions.
Coffee shop
You can enjoy a break in the café in the picturesque courtyard of the castle.
