Description

Majestically perched above the Elbe River, Albrechtsburg Meissen is a late Gothic architectural masterpiece and the oldest castle complex in Germany. Anyone interested in history, architecture, or porcelain will find it a rewarding destination.
Albrechtsburg is not only an impressive landmark overlooking the city of Meissen, but also a historically rich excursion site. The elegant multi-level castle complex captivates visitors with its delicate architecture, winding staircases, light-flooded windows, and magnificent vaults. A highlight of the tour is the Great Spiral Staircase – a free-standing spiral staircase considered a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture.
Inside the castle, visitors can explore elaborately designed exhibition rooms, multimedia installations, and historical wall paintings from the 19th century. They tell the eventful story of the region, from the founding of the Margraviate to the invention of European porcelain. Especially worth seeing is the so-called Böttger Room, dedicated to the first European porcelain manufactory.
Historical Information

As early as 929, King Henry I had a first fortification built on this site, laying the foundation for Meissen’s later rise as the center of the border region known as the Mark Meissen – which is why the castle is often referred to as the "Cradle of Saxony." Starting in 1471, the Wettin brothers Ernst and Albrecht commissioned the construction of a new residence here, whose representative architecture marked the beginning of the castle type in Germany.
However, Albrechtsburg was never permanently used as a seat of government. It wasn’t until Augustus the Strong breathed new life into it by founding the first European porcelain manufactory in its rooms in 1710. In 1863, the production moved out and the castle underwent extensive restoration. To this day, magnificent wall paintings, portraits, and neo-Gothic furnishings reflect the history of Saxony and the Albrechtsburg.
How to get there

Albrechtsburg is located in the heart of the city of Meissen in the federal state of Saxony, directly above the Elbe River. If arriving by car, follow the B101 or B6 into the city center. Paid parking is available near the historic town center and around Domplatz.
The castle is also easy to reach by public transport. From Meissen train station, it’s about a 15-minute walk through the historic old town up to the castle. Alternatively, bus lines run to the stop "Meißen, Freiheit," from where it’s only a few minutes to the castle entrance.
