Description
Saalfeld an der Saale, one of the oldest towns in Thuringia, is home to the world of the fairy caves. Visitors learn interesting facts about former mining, the life of the miners and the formation of today's fairy caves. The fascinating underground world can be explored on guided tours through the exhibition mine. The tours range from classic tours to themed tours and children's tours.
Grottoneum adventure exhibition
At the Grottoneum museum, you can become an explorer yourself and discover the secrets of the fairy grottos at various hands-on and knowledge stations. For example, you can learn a lot about the growth of stalactites and the geological profile of the fairy caves. A film in the cave cinema tells the story of how the fairy grottos came to be.
Fairy World Adventure Forest
You can embark on a journey into the magical world of elves, fairies and trolls in the adventure forest. The forest is divided into five different areas. In the "Garden of Fairy Plants" you will find all kinds of medicinal herbs. In the "Realm of the Forest Spirits", visitors can expect a barefoot path, a troll house and a wobbly suspension bridge, among other things. In the "Fairy Salon", magical birthdays are celebrated and the troll tree houses explored. Feeling boxes, a bird's nest swing and a fairy xylophone extend the offer in the "Grove of the Light Fairies". Visitors will find the Butterfly Dome, the Little Flower Castle and butterfly gardens in the "Fairy Meadow".
Historical Information
Originally, black alum slate was mined in the area of today's fairy caves. This created underground cavities which, over time, turned into a unique stalactite cave.
