The Geierlay suspension bridge sweeps 360 meters across a valley stream, hanging 100 meters above the ground between the villages of Mörsdorf and Sosberg. The bridge is one of the most popular day-trip destinations in the region and sits right along the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig hiking trail.

From the parking lot in Mörsdorf, where you'll also find a visitor center, you walk roughly four kilometers through a small forest to reach the bridge, where you're rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley.

You'll definitely want a good head for heights when crossing, as there's a sheer drop on both sides. The suspension bridge is freely accessible year-round with no admission fee.

Hiking Around the Suspension Bridge

It's well worth combining a visit to the bridge with a hike. The area around the Geierlay offers several loop trails ranging from three to 14 kilometers in length. The classic route is the just-under-six-kilometer Geierlay Loop, which starts at the visitor center, crosses the suspension bridge, and returns via the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail.

Historical Information

The idea of building a suspension bridge was first mentioned back in 2006, but was quickly dismissed as "not feasible." Four years later, however, the concept was revived and pushed forward by Ingo Börsch, Hans-Peter Plattern, and Marcus Kirchhoff.

Several more years passed before construction could begin, mainly due to the need to secure financing. Construction of the Geierlay suspension bridge finally started on May 26, 2015, and the bridge was completed in a record time of just six months.

How to get there

If you're arriving via the A61, exit the motorway at the Pfalzfeld junction toward the B327 Hunsrückhöhenstraße. Continue in the direction of Kastellaun / Hermeskeil and follow the signs to Mörsdorf from Kastellaun onward.

If you're planning to come via the A48, exit at Kaifenheim and head toward Treis-Karden. From the Moselle bridge, follow the signs to Blankenrath/Kirchberg along the Moselallee. After passing Kloster Engelport in the Flaumbach valley, bear half-left and continue toward Mörsdorf.

For your visit to the suspension bridge, you can park at the visitor center on Kastellauner Straße in Mörsdorf. Additional paid parking is available at the sports ground, in the commercial area, and if needed at the hiking car park.
