Historical Information
Cartoon sailor Popeye was first introduced by Elzie Segar in 1929. After his popularity increased, plans for a film began around the mid-70s. Therefor, Popeye Village was constructed at Anchor Bay in 1979 as the film set for the musical film starring Robin Williams as the popular sailor. Filming started in January 1980. After the film was shot, the set slowly turned into one of Malta's major tourist attractions.
