Description
The Open Air Museum Lychnostatis is a privately run museum, which was opened in 1992. Not only are the inner rooms of the museum filled with exhibition samples based on the history and culture of Crete, but also the building itself is a part of the exhibition. The buildings were constructed without the usage of technical aid, an excavator or other similar machinery. The founder of the museum mainly used wood and stone to built it.
Exhibition
The museum exhibits anything from everyday objects up to medicinal herbs, so that visitors gain a wide range of the aspects of life on Crete. The museum is conceptualised in an interactive way. All visitors are encouraged to experience the museum with all their senses and are more than welcome to touch anything they see. Especially children love this and enjoy their time here thoroughly. At regular intervals, events such as Greek dance evenings and cooking evenings as well as wine festivals will be taking place here.

Guided tours are offered in the following languages: English, French, Russian and by early request also in German. The museum café invites all guests to have a break and try out several regional specialities. This way you can additionally support the museum as its café is the largest source of funds.

How to get there
The museum in Hersonissos is located relatively close to the beach promenade of Crete. You will find it amidst the tourist area of the island in a rather quiet side street.
