Description
The Holmenkollen Ski Arena is one of the most famous winter sports areas in the world and is one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. It includes the Holmenkollen Ski Museum, the ski jump, various shops, a café and the ski simulator.
The Ski Museum
Inside the ski jump is the world's oldest ski museum, which opened in 1923. Here, various permanent and temporary exhibitions present the 4000-year history of skiing. You can either explore the museum on your own or take part in a guided tour. Skiing plays an important role in Norway's cultural history, which is why the ski museum presents some important aspects related to the Norwegian history of skiing. Skis were once a necessity, used for example for transportation or hunting. Today, however, skiing is primarily associated with fun and sport.
The Ski Jump
Various ski jumping competitions have taken place at Holmenkollen every year since 1892, making the jump the world's oldest ski jump. It was also the venue for the 1952 Winter Olympics. The jump, which was modernized several times, was demolished in 2008 and rebuilt. In March 2010, the new jump could be officially opened and is now one of the most modern ski jumping facilities in the world. The ski jump was built from 1000 tons of steel and towers 60 meters into the sky. The horizontally cut top forms a viewing platform that opens up a magnificent panoramic view over Oslo. The ski jump is connected to all facilities at Holmenkollen. Instead of several separate pavilions, everything from the judges' and Royal Family's cabins to the souvenir shop and the entrance to the ski museum has been integrated into a holistic overall picture.
The Ski Simulator
Those who wish can experience a "jump" from the Holmenkollen jump and the feeling of skiing on the world's toughest downhill slopes through a simulator. This is made possible by technology that was once only used for pilots and astronauts. It combines the movements of a flight simulator with an "eye-view" film and thereby creates a special, realistic feeling.
The Holmenkollen Ski Arena
In addition to the museum, ski jump and ski simulator, the Holmenkollen Ski Arena also has a café, a souvenir shop and a museum shop. The area also offers beautiful nature and is very popular as a hiking and winter sports area. Here you can cross-country ski, ski touring, ski jump or downhill ski while enjoying the great view of Oslo. Every winter, the Nordic Ski World Cup events take place here. At Holmenkollen there is also a zipline that allows you to fly from the top of the jump to the foot of the mountain while also enjoying the magnificent view.
