Description

Chlemoutsi Castle—the name translates as “little mountain”—is a Crusader castle from the High Middle Ages, located in the west of the Peloponnese on a 250-meter-high hill near the village of Kastro.
Architecture
It can be seen as an example of French medieval fortress architecture, but also has strong Byzantine stylistic influences.
The castle complex consists of an outer wall and an inner castle wall, which merge into one wall on the southwestern side. Inside the castle, there is a chapel and the large residence that was inhabited by the rulers, as well as several smaller buildings.
Visiting
The castle offers a magnificent view of the coast and the sea. You can also visit the museum room, which is located in the castle hall. Here you will find many excavated objects from the castle's history.
During the summer months, many events such as concerts and medieval festivals take place in the castle. At night, the castle is illuminated, which is particularly impressive when viewed from the coast.
Historical Information
The castle was built between 1220 and 1230 by the French crusader Geoffrey I of Villehardouin to defend the neighboring port. In the centuries that followed, the castle changed hands several times, coming under the control of the Turks and Venetians, among others. However, they made very few changes to the castle's architecture, which is why Chlemoutsi is now one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Greece.
