Description
Time Out Market Lisboa is a modern culinary meeting place housed in the listed Mercado da Ribeira market hall on Avenida 24 de Julho. The concept brings together high-quality offerings from selected operators under one roof – in contrast to typical food courts, only providers offering high quality and authenticity were specifically selected for this location. Over 30 food stalls, eight bars and a dozen shops make the site one of the most important gastronomic hotspots in the Portuguese capital. The building's iron architecture has been deliberately preserved, lending the modern concept an extraordinary atmosphere.
Culinary diversity and seating flexibility
The offerings range from traditional Portuguese cuisine to international specialities and modern variations. Michelin-starred chefs operate their stalls here alongside up-and-coming talents from the local gastronomic scene. Seafood, fish, grilled specialities, Asian dishes, Italian pasta and South American creations are on the menus. A special feature is the flexible seating arrangement – all 750 seats serve all stalls, so groups can order from different vendors and still eat together.
Historical Information
The Mercado da Ribeira opened in 1882 and was designed by engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia with characteristic iron architecture. For more than a century, the market hall was the vibrant centre of Lisbon's food trade. Over time, the entire complex steadily lost its importance and threatened to fall into disrepair. In 2014, lifestyle magazine Time Out took on the comprehensive redesign of the west wing and created an innovative gastronomy concept. The traditional food market remained in the east wing and retains its historic character to this day.
