A Spectacular High-Altitude Crossing Above the Paiva Gorge
Located in the Arouca Geopark in northern Portugal, the "516 Arouca" suspension bridge ranks among the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. It spans 516 meters across the gorge of the Paiva River, connecting two steeply dropping mountain slopes.
The structure is made up of steel cables and an open metal grid walkway, meaning the drop below is visible at all times and the sheer scale of the landscape can be felt with every step. A nervous flutter in your stomach when first setting foot on the bridge is pretty much guaranteed.
The bridge runs approximately 175 meters above the Paiva River, which has carved its way deep into the rock over time. From the structure, the sheer cliff faces, forested slopes, and the river below are all visible at once. Thanks to the bridge's length, the perspective shifts continuously as you cross, gradually revealing the landscape from new angles.
The Arouca Geopark is well known for its geological diversity and forms part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Network. The surrounding area features a variety of rock formations and rare geological structures that contribute to the region's scientific significance.
Across Wooden Walkways Along the Paiva River
The bridge is only accessible via the so-called Paiva Walkways, a developed network of wooden boardwalks and hiking trails running along the river. Depending on the chosen entry point, the approach covers varying distances, all leading through diverse and scenic terrain. Forested sections alternate with open rocky stretches, offering constantly changing views down into the valley.
The area clearly reflects the geological diversity that defines the Arouca Geopark. Beyond the landscape itself, traces of natural processes are visible throughout, the result of long periods of geological development that have shaped the region into what it is today.
Important note: A ticket is required to cross the suspension bridge and must be booked exclusively in advance online, as access is only permitted within designated time slots.
Historical Information

Where Rugged Mountain Terrain Meets Engineering Achievement
The planning of the 516 Arouca suspension bridge was driven by the goal of further developing the Arouca Geopark as a tourist destination. The aim was to expand the existing infrastructure while creating a structure that integrates naturally into its surroundings.
The steep topography made the construction a significant technical challenge. The bridge was anchored directly into the rock faces, ensuring a stable connection between the two sides of the gorge. After several years of planning and construction, the bridge officially opened in 2021.
How to get there
By car: Drive to Arouca, then continue to the official entry points of the Paiva Walkways, such as Areinho or Alvarenga. Parking is available at both locations.
By public transport: Travel to the Arouca region, then continue by regional bus or taxi to the trailheads.
On foot: Access is via the Paiva Walkways, depending on the entry point, the walk to the bridge takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
